It looks like OS X passwords are still more secure than Windows passwords, even with an 8-character limit. I was not really able to get Keychain to accept a truncated password. When I was testing the password lengths, I set an 8-character one, was immediately prompted by iChat to enter a password into Keychain, and forgot that I had already changed it from a 9-character one. If OS 10.3 fixes the character limit, the passwords will be even more secure than they are now.

    {
Microsoft has used two encoding schemes, also known as hashing functions, to encrypt passwords. The first, known as LANManager or LANMan, was used by Windows 3.1, 95, 98, Me and early NT systems to secure passwords that were used to connect to early Windows networks.

The LANMan scheme has several weaknesses, including converting all characters to uppercase, splitting passwords into 7-byte chunks, and not using an additional random element known as "salt." While the more recent NTHash fixes the first two weaknesses, it still does not use a random number to make the hashes more unique.

The result: The same password encoded on two Windows machines will always be the same. That means that a password cracker can create a large lookup table and break passwords on any Windows computer. Unix, Linux and the Mac OS X, however, add a 12-bit salt to the calculation, making any brute force attempt to break the encryption take 4,096 times longer or require 4,096 times more memory.

Go into Windows Explorer and right click on the disk (if you mean the CD or DVD) and select "EJECT".
Btw, the OPTION key is not used to eject optical media from the ODD, the EJECT key on the top right of the keyboard is used for that.

Perhaps I need to be a tad bit clearer.Uhh
-40% of the time I go into a fresh install of windows,I cannot eject(To install mac drivers
-The option key USED to allow me to eject first before i went into windows
-I'll most probably be unable to go back to mac after installation of windows cuz of the option key being unable to work

They're telling other's who even call to ask that they're sold out cuz I've already claimed the one here.

Has it ever been discovered what stonehenge was actually for?

    Ask an Archaeoastronomist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaeoastronomy)... :]

When a group of people begin to grow plants (in order to have food for the group to survive), those people then need a good "calendar app".

Stonehedge is hardly unique in this regard. Similar "calendar apps" have been found around the world, as built by various ancient cultures. For example: in Ohio (U.S.), another "Woodhenge (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/07/100720-woodhenge-stonehenge-ohio-fort-ancient-science/)" is currently being unearthed and examined by archaeologists, which was built by the Hopewell (circa A.D. 1 to 900) culture.

People brick iPhones because they are trying to unlock it and have to mess with the baseland. Theres really no risk in simply jailbreaking. Worse thing that can happen is you have to reset and restore. As far as iOS updates go, if you update, you lose your jailbreak. The jailbreak for 4.3 has not been publicly released yet and the tethered version that is out now is crap so wait for a public release of a 4.3 untethered jailbreak, or downgrade to 4.2.1 (if you saved your SHSH blobs) and jailbreak with Greenpois0n.

4 pin = 400 FW no power - used on DV video cameras
    6 pin = 400 FW with power - HD's, scanners, etc
    9 pin = 800 FW with power

The great thing about firewire... no processor power is used, unlike USB that uses the processor.I've always heard the 6pin variant referred to as FW600 while FW400 was reserved only for the mini 4pin which doesn't have power. I realize it may not be technically correct but it's always allowed easier differentiation between the two connectors.

Windows is a typical masturbation operating system that constantly tries to satisfy itself (herself/himself?).

Windows 7 has many background processes that do things, consume CPU cycles and therefore nibble battery capacity.

OS X like most UN*X operating systems is behaving more orderly here.I would avoid looking at Activity Monitor for the rest of your life.

Yeah, using a tripod as counter weight is really useful. It will add weight and some grip. Try to find the center of balance (balance the tripod with the camera attached); put it on it's side, so camera on one side and legs on the other side, horizontal. This is how real steady cams work.

Or just use a tripod in an angle to hold it with both hands.

Altough I was going for a not stable look in this video it still looks pretty stable. None of the shots were done on a tripod standing on it's legs. Just by using a tripod as extension: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou_uT3154Kk

Hi. This is my first post here. I've been through most of the forum entries and googled around but didn't seem to find an answer to my specific question. So here goes:

I've had my MBpro 13" since the summer of 2009. I know my way around a PC but Mac is a new experience to me but I wanted to try it out to see what all the fuzz was about.
Sometime last summer my Mac started to freeze when I opened it up after sleep mode or brought it out of stand by mode (I hardly ever turn it off but the problem is the same after a fresh startup). It did not matter what application I was using, Mail, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, iTunes, Finder - whatever application the result would be the same. The beach ball would just keep spinning and spinning and everything would be locked down for about a minute or two. In the beginning of such a period I could navigate to another window or the desktop and click something but after about 10 seconds I couldn't do that either. After a minute or two everything would be back to normal.
Originally I thought it was Mail that was causing the problem because I resolved it by deleting the plist. But after getting all of my mails back into the inbox and getting 2-3 feeds from various sites the problem was back. Deleting the plist and not getting the feeds helped for a while - 3-4 months or so and then the beach ball-problem came back. This time I stopped using Mail for a while to see if this was the problem. It wasn't and in the end I reinstalled the OS.
Some months later everything started all over - only this time it was worse. Grey screen prevented me from doing anything and after a hard reset I couldn't even access the desktop. I tried everything - pressing D or T during startup, pressing Option-command-p-r, but nothing helped.
Another reinstall solved the problem for a while. And after that I've been running a repair disk permissions regularly. Somehow it always found something to repair - this struck me as odd but I thought, as long as it's not freezing I'm good. Well - now it's freezing again and it started after I installed 10.6.7. I've unticked the harddisk sleep-thingy and removed Firefox but the beach ball apparently doesn't care if I use Apple-software or not. Last freeze was in Safari. The time before that was in iTunes.
ANY help would be much appreciated. Could my hdd be corrupt? Why didn't I have a problem the first year then?

No, but you could do a block copy restore of the install DVD to a small partition on either its drive, or an external HD connected to that machine.

If the 2nd machine is an Intel Mac, its drive will be partitioned using a GUID map. PPC Macs can't boot to a drive using that map - it must be APM. So, if the preceding is true, you will need an external drive partitioned using APM (in the Disk Utility "Partition" tab, click on "Options..." to set the map type).

To make the bootable copy on your other machine's HD (or external drive), run Disk Utility and create a small (10GB should be enough) partition formatted Mac OS Extended (also making sure to set APM as the partition map type). Then, use Restore to copy the DVD to that new partition, making sure to check "erase destination" (which enables block copy).

Start up your other (2nd) Mac using FireWire Target Disk mode (hold down 'T' at startup). Now, when you startup the iMac G4, hold down the 'option', then select the partition you cloned the DVD to on your other machine. You should be able to startup on it, and during install, select the iMac's HD as the install target.

Hope that's not too confusing - I mixed "other" and "2nd" when describing your not-iMac-with-working-DVD machine. The bottom line is to access a bootable partition on that machine that you can boot off of using that machine in Target Disk Mode, connected to the iMac via FireWire.

Or, find an external FireWire DVD drive for the iMac. :)

Nice picts Ward, can you get 8-10 hrs on the batteries?

I used to love playing crystal quest on my MacPortable.

I'm sure you are running some AfterDark screen savers as well.

Does anyone remember the "Barney Blaster" screen module?
I was NOT allowed to play that in front of my young nieces/nephews back then.

ITASOR, the lines you see when you put other LCDs on the wrong refresh rate: do they _really_ look like the alternate 1 pixel wide static horizontal lines on the PBs?

I only ask, because the PBs also show a variety of wider horizontal "interference" banding and wavy dynamic diagonal banding in some colours, which is worse in the top left of the screen. And I wonder if this is what you refer to.

    Cheers!

p.s Not got your pixelmurder to do its trick yet on one rouge sticky pixel - but it's fun all the same :)

Personally, I think it's a refresh rate issue which I think is a software issue. If I put any of my LCDs on the wrong refresh rate, they have identical lines to those of the powerbook.

    Hi lokerd,

can you or someone explain how to double tap to switch apps with Sbsettings? I cannot see this option!

Sure, under the Activator settings, you can set what does what. Click on the Anywhere button, then scroll down to "Status Bar".

I have double tap status bar set to bring up the application switcher. Swipe right brings up sbsettings, swipe left brings up system settings. Swipe down brings up the home springboard.

    Hope this helps.
